Perfect Days
I’ve been checking out a lot of criterion collection dvd’s at the library lately. ( I think I’ve previously extolled the joys of cancelling all your streaming services and exclusively using a dvd player and library card for your entertainment needs, but once again, highly recommend).
I recently watched Wim Wender’s “Perfect Days” which follows a middle aged man who works as a public toilet cleaner through his days in Tokyo. I can’t help but enjoy it as a quiet affirmation of the joys of physical media. He listens to old cassette tapes in his van, takes photos with a film camera throughout his workday, and ends his days riding his bicycle. He falls asleep reading a paperback next to a lamp, after caring for his houseplants.
He does a simple job, does it well, and is generally unbothered by the rush of the world. It’s an atmospheric and quiet movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think there is plenty to be aspired by and think about in the realm of what truly makes for a perfect day, and what is simply a waste of our time. Let me know if you check it out, I think you’ll enjoy it.
